Ethics Philosophy and Citizenship ‘EPC’ lessons

We would like to encourage our parents/careers to discuss what their children have learnt in their EPC lessons this week, helping to expand their personal development.

At Don Valley Academy, our core personal development programme is delivered through Ethics Philosophy and Citizenship ‘EPC’ lessons. EPC places social and personal development at the heart of its design, with group discussion, self-expression and the promotion of tolerance & respect towards the opinions of others assessed in each unit of work. Providing opportunities for pupils to develop confidence, resilience and knowledge to stay mentally and physically healthy are also included and developed on a cross curricular level.

This week in EPC lessons…

  • In Year 7 students have finished off the story of Boy 87 exploring where the story could lead, due to the cliff hanger ending. They have been empathising by reflecting on the quote ‘I am still Shif. But from now on there will always be two parts to me’. They also created a book review expressing their thoughts and feelings of the book.
  • In Year 8 students were discussing why legal and illegal drugs are addictive and the effect that they can have on wider society.
  • In Year 9 groups have been focussing on happiness in a non-religious world. Pupils have compared how happiness changes in a religious view to a non-religious stand.
  • In Year 10 students have been continuing their studies about politics and studying the electoral process and how laws are changed in the UK.
  • In Year 11 students are continuing the financial scheme of work in which they have been calculating deductions from gross pay and discussing the importance of understanding how payslip work.
