Intent Statement

We believe that students should gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analyzing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. Our music curriculum will give students a chance to; 

  • Recognise features of various genres;
  • Develop the confidence to perform ;
  • Use ideas creatively to compose music in a variety of styles and structures;
  • Demonstrate tolerance of others’ opinions and ideas;
  • Take ownership of their own creative work ;
  • Work with others to solve problems
  • Support and show respect to others when performing;
  • Use a variety of musical instruments and Music Software;
  • Be involved in all aspects of music making  



Other general principles

Our pedagogy is underpinned by:

  • The regular use of modelling of practical tasks
  • A variety of topics are used at KS3 to introduce and develop skills and knowledge needed at KS4
  • Marking and targeted feedback that informs planning and addresses misconceptions.
  • Using errors as a learning opportunity and building resilience.

We will enrich our curriculum by:

  • encouraging students to contribute to the life of the school and the community, and use these ‘real’ contexts to develop their skills and knowledge in Music·         Providing opportunity for students to perform in various performance environments


Our curriculum will enable students to:

  • Be able to access all aspects of music through effective differentiation
  • develop new skills through a variety of interesting contexts to foster enjoyment.
  • build on their understanding of the importance of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and tolerance and respect
  • improve their spiritual, social, moral and cultural understanding of the world.
